Safety First: Safety in the Water is a Pool Owner's First Priority

27th Apr 2023

Swimming pools are meant to be fun but they also present some potential safety hazards. It’s the pool owner’s responsibility to keep the swimming pool and poolside area as safe as possible to protect family and guests.

Consider these pool safety tips:

Follow Pool Rules

First of all, it's important to establish and enforce swimming pool rules. This includes no diving in shallow water, no running or horseplay around the pool, and no swimming alone. Make sure everyone in your household and guests at your pool know and follow the rules.

Keep Safety Equipment Handy

While non-slip ladders and steps are essential, it's also important to have pool safety equipment like life hooks and safety rings nearby. These items can be used to quickly reach and rescue someone in case of an emergency.

Keep an Eye on the Kids

Be particularly watchful of children around water. Young and inexperienced swimmers should wear swim vests to help keep them afloat, even if they accidentally drift into deeper water. Arm floats and kickboards are no substitute for a life vest, but they can help weak swimmers improve their skills. Contact your local YMCA for information about their Safety Around Water program and youth swimming lessons.

Designate a Lifeguard

Further, if your pool is large or if you have many guests, it's a good idea to have a designated lifeguard. A lifeguard can keep an eye on everyone in the pool and quickly respond to any incidents. They can also enforce pool rules and make sure everyone is safe. Pool owners also can contact the American Red Cross for CPR Training and Lifeguard Certification.

Watch the Weather

Don’t swim in the rain. Be aware of weather reports and possible stormy conditions. If it starts to rain, or if you hear thunder or see lightning, get out of the pool and under cover.

Maintain Water and Equipment

In addition to these pool safety tips, regular maintenance of pool equipment and chemical levels is crucial to ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming experience. Check your pool equipment regularly and fix any issues immediately. Keep chemical levels in check and clean your pool regularly to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and algae.

Ensure the well-being of your family and friends and make pool safety a top priority. Set pool rules and invest in the necessary pool equipment for a safe swim season.
