Though they were first introduced in the 1930's, saltwater pools are quickly becoming a popular trend, as they have many advantages over traditional chlorinated pools. However, there may be some circumstances in which a traditional pool is ideal for your home and lifestyle. Read the differences below to determine if you too should make the change.

Saltwater Pools

Saltwater pools provide consistently chlorinated and clean pool water. There is no manual chemistry involved in this. Another main advantage is that the saltwater pool is softer and better for the skin. We soften the water in our homes, so why not in the pool? If you and your family spend a substantial amount of time in the pool, this is the key for avoiding dry skin, burning eyes, and damaged hair. Saltwater pools also don't fade swimwear as quickly or smell like chlorine, and the pool isn't as susceptible to algae. Cost is a major factor in saltwater pools. While initially they're a bit more pricy to set up, the price of chemicals and maintenance is usually much lower.

Traditional Chlorine Pools

Unfortunately, saltwater pools are more abrasive to metals than your average pool. This pool requires a salt cell and its control box, which can be expensive if you need to replace it. The salt does cause some issues with the pH balance, so you'll have to test and adjust accordingly. Saltwater pools certainly require a lot of care and maintenance. If high maintenance and pricy repairs aren't ideal for you, it might be a good idea to stick with traditional chlorine.

There are a variety of advantages and disadvantages of saltwater pools, but it ultimately comes down to your budget, time for maintenance, and pool usage. Weigh the pros and cons along with how often you're in the water, and determine which of these your ideal choice is.
